The woman will be the third female officer to complete the required course, and the second woman to move into the infantry MOS since former Maj. Gen. Marina Herl did in 2017.
Three more women will attend the course in January, including two company-level officers who have been asked to transfer to two infantry units. Marine leaders have invited Marines to consider moving to the side this summer after the corps was left without a female commander.
Commanding General David Berger said earlier this year that he wanted to ensure that generals and lieutenants did not attempt the course while it was closed to women.

"If the door doesn't open first, why don't we say, 'OK, you're the captain -- if you don't say we're going to shoot you,'" Berger said. "...or if they leave or go into reserve, it's not an option for them, so why don't we choose it?"
Stephenson said the captains who will be on the course in January will be asked to transfer from the squad.
