Sig .22 Pistol
Although few small bore .22 pistols have hit the market with much fanfare, the release of the Sig P322 in early 2022 attracted a lot of attention. Sig Sauer has been rolling out expansions to its popular pistol line at a feverish pace for years, but the P322 represents an entirely new effort and is the company's only .22 LR pistol to date.

Creating a successful .22 pistol can be a tricky problem. Long-life pistols like the Ruger MK series and Browning Buck Marks offer stiff competition. Many smaller semi-autos like the Walther P22 and Browning 1911-22 – which are chambered for the .22 LR cartridge – will keep more people in the field.
A .22 pistol designed to mimic the feel of a popular centerfire model is not a new idea, and many full-bore 1911-22 clones have been produced—none of them really stand out. Walther produced them under license from Colt, as did other companies such as Chiappa. The idea of a full-size training pistol in an affordable, soft auto that fires the .22 LR cartridge is a good one, and it is the specialty of the full-size .22 training pistol that the Sig P322 captures. Well, there are many holsters available for the P322, both IWB and OWB, and even competition holsters. Some early offerings came from Sig Sauer and Vedder Holsters. Having a good holster is important for quality training.
The Sig P322 is similar to the popular P365 series of micro-compact 9mm, but is sized like a full-sized pistol. It has almost all the modern features that make it a true trainer and can raise the bar for .22 polymer pistols. It is immediately ready to wear with optics, light and silencer. Priced around $400, it is competitive in its class. Its closest competitor is probably the Taurus TX 22, and while the Sig P322 costs about a hundred bucks, it has 4 more rounds compared to the TX 22's 16 rounds, as well as optics ready.
I was eager to get to the range with the P322 and fired about 1,200 rounds during testing. I have tried over a dozen different .22 LR gases and shot the pistol with and around There is no suppression and with and without red dot optics.

Externally, the Sig P322 looks like a larger P365. It has almost the same appearance of the frame, grip, trigger and slide. There are a few notable differences - the main one being that the P322 is even bigger than the P365 XL. Another important difference is that the P322 has a full-size M1913 3-slot add-on rail and fiber optic polymer.
The front sight is attached with a screw instead of a dovetail and is secured from the inside of the frame. The fully adjustable visor is integrated into the polymer cover plate on the frame. The visor is adjustable for height and elevation using small flat head adjustment screws. Other minor external differences include the release lever, slide stop, safety and front cage pictured. The front knurling of the draw is located halfway down the slide and provides excellent traction. A similar-looking P365 front frame is located below the slide-out section.

One of the distinguishing features of the Sig P322 is its 20+1 round capacity. With few exceptions, almost all .22 semi-automatic pistol magazines are limited to 10 rounds due to the design of the rimmed cartridge itself. Single stack magazines have been the standard for .22 pistols for a long time, as the .22 LR rimmed cases are stacked on top of each other. Most .22 pistol magazines are angled forward so that the rim of the case can rest against the front of the rim on the lower shell. The P322 magazine succeeds in using a dual design and is more vertically oriented than other .22 magazines.

The P322 uses a double layer polymer magazine with a follow button that protrudes from both sides of the magazine body. Use them to empty the magazine and easily load 20 rounds. The gun comes with a spare magazine and a loading tool that depresses the magazine catch and saves you thumbs on high volume days. The 20 round capacity is overkill for a .22 pistol and the Sig P322 mag seems to be good at dealing with rimmed case issues.
In addition to the excellent capacity, shooters will love the absence of a magazine disconnect—a mechanism that prevents the pistol from firing without a magazine installed. Many .22 semi-automatic pistols use a magazine disconnect, and the lack of one makes the Sig Sauer P322 more shooter-friendly and similar to a midrange pistol.
The external controls on the Sig P322 are simple, low-profile, and ambidextrous. The pistol has a bolt stop and safety on the left and right sides, the magazine catch is double-sided. Apart from the firing pin - which is located on the left side of the frame - there is no noticeable difference in feel between left- and right-handed shooting.
The Sig P322 also comes with an interchangeable butt. As with other Sig pistols, the P322 comes with a flat barrel butt installed, but includes a curved trigger butt that can easily be swapped out if desired.

The Sig P322's 4-inch barrel is flush with the front of the slide. The barrel is threaded and comes with a small thread protector installed. Also includes a ½ x 28 adapter that folds over the front of the frame for suppressor use.
The Sig P322 comes optic ready, with the sight factory into a polymer film that covers the optic cut into the slide. The slide is cut to fit the Sig Romeo Zero red dot without any adapter plates and I was able to mount it with a Holosun HS407K X2.
The fiber optic sights on the P322 aren't on par with the factory sights on some centerfire Sig pistols, but the sights are fully adjustable for direction and elevation with small hex screws.

Sig Sauer's New P322 Rimfire Pistol
Although the Sig P322 shares the same distinctive features as the larger P365, it has a completely different internal design. The most important internal design feature is that the P322 uses a fixed barrel. This is common in .22 semi-auto pistols and seems to work well for the P322. The barrel is bolted to a stainless steel plate that is firmly attached to the frame. The jacket is what you see through the ejection port when the breech is closed.
Stripping the P322 is simple. After removing the bolt, the return spring is placed at the end of the barrel with a round sleeve. The small size is preserved thanks to the protection of the thread in the muzzle of the barrel. When using a damping adapter, the slide cannot be removed from the tank with the adapter installed. To remove the blank when using a suppressor adapter, make sure the gun is unloaded and the bolt is engaged. Remove the adapter block and replace it with the original thread blocker. In addition to the solid barrel, I noticed that the ejector is beveled almost to a sharp edge - chisel sharp - which seems to result in a more solid ejector case. In fact, it pulls them out further than I can handle when manually ejecting live rounds. Another design difference from the centerfire P365 and P320 series is that the P322 does not have a complete fire control group and can be easily removed - something that will help when cleaning the gun.

Another distinguishing feature of the Sig P322 is that it fires a hammer instead of a bolt. It features a hidden hammer on the rear of the frame that rotates through a gap in the rear of the slide and engages the firing pin. The slide is aluminum alloy, but appears to have a steel plate that holds the firing pin, suppressor, and case head support. The only downside I have found with the solid hammer design is that when cleaning with a hammer, the cleaning rod tends to scrape the hammer and the hammer needs to be pulled slightly to get it to seat well with the drill.

The most striking aspect of the Sig P322's handling is its weight—which is lighter in the hand than a similarly sized midrange pistol. Although a larger pistol than the P365 9mm series, the P322 weighs over half a pound.
