Aircraft Technician Navy - The RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT) provides initial vocational aviation trade training for the Army, Navy and Air Force to meet nationally recognized aeronautical technical skills. RAFSTT also conducts postgraduate courses for engineers and senior technicians working in ADF aviation.

The Defense Aeroskills Training Academy (DATA), a contract training organization run by BAE Systems in conjunction with its partner Pennant Trainnig Systems, provides all aeronautical and technical training to the RAFSTT. Military training, supervision and management of student progress, discipline and well-being is provided by RAAFSTT personnel. Both RAFSTT and DATA work closely together to nurture and develop desired attitudes and behaviors in students prior to their employment in the ADF support environment.

RAFSTT is one of the most diverse training units in the Air Force. The school has an annual enrollment of approximately 900 pupils and students and is responsible for the implementation of more than 25 different technical courses. RAAFSTT graduates maintain aircraft, aircraft components, weapons, aircrew rescue equipment and other technical equipment, and manage maintenance processes at all levels.

RAFSTT's proud history dates back to March 1, 1940, when Technical School No. 1 was established in Melbourne. After the Second World War, No 1 Engineering School retained its wartime training role, moving to facilities at RAAF Station Forest Hill near Wagga Wagga. Reorganized as the RAAF Ground Training School on 4 February 1946, the unit was redesignated the RAAF Technical College in May 1950 and took its current name on 1 December 1952. From its inception the school has focused on producing skilled technical personnel to the Air The edge of Force.

In its history, the school was mainly concerned with vocational training, but also engaged in recruitment, education and training in public service. In 1993, following a technical restructuring of the industry, the trade and technical apprenticeship scheme was abolished. Army Air Commercial Training began at RAAFSTT in 1969 and Naval Air Industrial Training in 1993. In 1996 the school's role expanded significantly following its merger with the RAAF School of Clerical and Supply Training. In 2005, this aspect of the school was separated and formed as the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training. The RAAFSTT has successfully trained over 100,000 technical and non-technical personnel who have served Australia with pride and distinction in both peacetime and conflict.

On 19 November 1971, the RAAFSTT took a unique and privileged place in Air Force history by being the first RAAF squadron to receive the Unit Queen's Colour. The award of the Queen's Color to the RAAFSTT recognized the school's enviable success in training thousands of military personnel across a range of specialities. The color is honored as a symbol of the Queen's confidence in the school and as a sign of success.

In June 2003, the then Chief of Defense Staff, General Peter Cosgrove, recognized the RAAFSTT's efforts by awarding the school an honorable mention. The awards recognized the school's exemplary reputation as a three-service training institution, operating in a fully integrated manner and comprising representatives from all three services, the Australian public service and a contractual training provider.

RAFSTT was awarded the Stonehaven Trophy in 2016 and 2018 as the Air Force's most capable training unit.

The Defense Aeroskills Training Academy (DATA) provides ADF Aviation Technical Training (ATT) at RAAF Base Wagga. Operated by BAE Systems as prime contractor and partner Pennant Training Systems, DATA was established in March 2013 to provide basic and advanced training for approximately 900 ADF trainees annually for technical trades related to ADF aircraft.

DATA provides state-of-the-art training, including the use of some of the most advanced training equipment, including the Integrated Avionics Maintenance Trainer (IAMT) and Generic Flying Control Trainer (GenFly) - the first of their kind in Australia and the use of tablets to accommodate student learning styles and ensure the best results are achieved.
